Decarbonization strategy in practice – students as ESG experts

PZU Group organized an educational workshop for students, the topic of which was “Decarbonization strategy, or how we calculate carbon footprint in the PZU Group”.

In an era of growing climate awareness and increasingly ambitious environmental goals, the ability to calculate carbon footprint and create decarbonization strategies is becoming a key competence of future business leaders. With them in mind, the PZU Group organized an educational workshop for students, the topic of which was “Decarbonization strategy, or how we calculate carbon footprint in the PZU Group”.

The training was practical in nature – participants took on the role of ESG experts, whose task was to develop a detailed carbon footprint report and design a realistic decarbonization strategy for one of the largest financial institutions in Poland. The workshop allowed students not only to learn about the tools and methods used in the PZU Group, but also to understand how complex and multidimensional the process of climate transformation is in a large organization.

During the meeting, participants learned, among others:

  • how to identify key sources of greenhouse gas emissions in an organization,
  • how to create a comprehensive carbon footprint report in line with international standards,
  • how to develop a decarbonization plan that takes into account both climate goals and stakeholder needs,
  • what are the best practices for reducing emissions in the insurance sector,
  • how to engage employees, customers and business partners in climate actions.

The workshop was conducted by ESG experts from the PZU Group, who deal with environmental data analysis, non-financial reporting and implementation of sustainable development strategies on a daily basis. Thanks to their experience, students were able to learn about the real challenges that organizations face in the decarbonization process - from difficulties in obtaining data, through the selection of appropriate indicators, to the communication of climate actions externally.

One of the key elements of the workshop was a decision simulation - participants, working in teams, had to propose specific reduction actions, such as changing the car fleet, optimizing energy consumption in offices or cooperating with suppliers on sustainable practices. Each decision was assessed in terms of environmental effectiveness, implementation costs and impact on the company's reputation.

The training was very well received - students appreciated the opportunity to work on real data and case studies, as well as direct contact with industry experts. For many of them, this was their first contact with ESG topics in such a practical dimension.

Idea of such workshops is an element of the PZU Group's broader strategy, which focuses on climate education and development of future competences. Investing in young talents, the company not only supports the transformation of the labor market, but also builds the foundations for a more sustainable and resilient economy.
